At The Sato Project, we rescue dogs of all shapes and sizes, but satos are usually small dogs under 30lbs. The majority have terrier in them so they tend to be incredibly smart and quick to learn. Many have the instantly recognizable ‘sato’ ears; large ears that stick up and if these amazing little dogs ever get their own Disney movie then we are sure they would be able to fly.

Life on the streets and beaches of Puerto Rico is unforgiving, and most stray dogs don’t survive past their second birthday. In response to these harsh conditions, nature has adapted—leading to larger litters born in a desperate bid for survival.

The name “sato” is instantly recognizable in Puerto Rico, and a key part of our mission is reshaping public perception of these remarkable dogs. We believe they deserve to be cherished, celebrated, and recognized as Puerto Rico’s official dog. Every day, we fight to protect them and secure their future.

Right now, an estimated 650,000 stray dogs wander Puerto Rico, struggling to survive. One dog at a time, we’re changing lives—rescuing, advocating, fighting back and building lasting change.
